Coin Grading

This is a measurement of the grade of preservation of a coin, and can range from pristine and perfect state direct from the mint’s press to worn virtually smooth after years of wear in circulation. For coins which have seen little or no circulation coin grading may and often will also take account of the quality of the initially strike as the dies used to strike the coin can themselves wear out whereby the last coin struck from a worn set of dies may begin their lives with much fainter design detail than earlier strikes.

Coins are traditionally graded into bands depending on how much wear they have.

Uncirculated - A coin which has no sign of having spent time in circulation .

Extremely Fine – Coins which have spent a minimum of time in circulation and have the minimal associated wear. All the Extremely Fine detail will be clear.

Very Fine – Coins which have spent a longer time in circulation and have the associated wear. All the Very Fine detail will be clear.

Fine – Coins which have spent more time in circulation and have the associated wear. All the Fine detail will be clear.

Very Good - Coins which have spent a long time in circulation and have the associated wear. Not all the design will be discernible.

Coin Grading takes into account more than simple wear, stains, toning and discolouration to the coins surfaces are considered, also knocks and nicks to the coins edge or surfaces, factors such as hay marking and adjustment lines are considered on earlier coins.

A coins grade is usually the single most important determinant of its value, so grading standards have now developed to a stage where within the traditional five bands described above further grading into more detail occurs.

CGS - UK grades coins on a 1 -100 percentage style scale with 100 being perfection.
